Our Values and Ethos

British Values

At Haberdashers' Slade Green Primary, we pride ourselves on being an inclusive school.  We nurture our children to grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible and tolerant adults, who make a positive difference to our society.  We encourage our children to be creative, unique, resilient, open-minded and independent individuals.

We ensure that fundamental British values are introduced, discussed, and lived out through the ethos and work of the school and promoted through our school vision and our values.  Understanding of these concepts is deepened through our broad and balanced curriculum and explicitly taught through Personal, Social, Health and Emotional (PSHE) and Religious Education.    Children learn to explore and understand their own and other cultures and learn from our differences.  They respect, appreciate, and embrace the ethnic diversity of our school and our community.

We ensure children have exposure to a wide experience beyond their local community for example by providing a wide range of visits and visitors.  Pupil voice and leadership is taken seriously, and pupil leaders make valuable contributions to the development of our school.  Opportunities for pupil leadership are extensive and include our Head Pupils, Pupil Parliament, Eco warriors, Reading Leaders, Wellbeing Champions, Sports Leaders and are represented on the Trust's Youth Advisory Board.

Specific themes

Democracy:
Democracy is clearly evident within our school. This starts with the election of our Head Pupils.   Children apply for the posts, go through a shortlisting process, create campaign teams, posters, deliver speeches to the whole school and all children then vote at our polling booths.  Our Head Pupils take part in some very important tasks, such as speaking at whole school events, chairing all of our other leadership committees, and representing the school on the Youth Advisory Board.

Pupils also have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our annually elected Pupil Parliament.  They are consulted on school improvement issues and undertake projects.  In the past few years they have named each class and House Team, devised an anti-bullying charter and undertaken fundraising activities to support enrichment.

Children also elect our Head Pupils, Eco Warriors, Wellbeing Champions, Reading Leaders, Digital and Sports Leaders.

The Rule of Law:
All staff members have high expectations of the children in our school. The importance of laws and rules are consistently reinforced in the classroom, as well as through school assemblies. Pupils are taught to understand the need for laws - that they are there for individual protection, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Pupils follow a positive behaviour policy and clearly understand the rewards and sanctions that are used. Assemblies and discussions in class focus on recognising right from wrong and visits from the Police and Fire Service help to reinforce these messages. Pupils from Nursery to year 6 discuss many moral issues throughout their PSHE lessons. We deal openly and responsibly with any events in the news and put them into perspective, according to age of children.

Individual Liberty:
Our pupils know that they are unique and special.  Pupils are encouraged to be independent learners, they can make their own choices about what activities they would like to do and can talk about our own ideas and opinions, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.  Developing their self- esteem and self-confidence is very important. Pupils are encouraged to understand their personal freedoms and are taught how to use these rights. They are taught consideration for others through our curriculum.  E-safety lessons enable the children to make choices in a safe manner

We aim to develop children’s sense of social conscience and community. All of our staff and children are actively involved in supporting our fundraising campaigns wit each of our Houses fundraising for variety of established charities, but also responding to events home and abroad.  This includes Children in need, Comic relief, Ukraniaan appeal, food banks, Red Nose day and the Poppy appeal.

Children contribute to our equality pledge and in July 2022 we were awarded the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Quality Mark.

Mutual Respect

The values of respect and tolerance permeate all areas of school life. This ensures a climate within which pupils feel safe and secure. Pupils treat everyone equally and listen to and respect other people’s opinions and values. Our strong school ethos encourages everyone to consider and support each other and to celebrate the worth and individuality of every member of the school community by enhancing pupils’ understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society. Discussions in class and during whole school assemblies as well as issues that are promoted during collective worship, allow the children to show respect and reverence to all other individuals. We give children opportunities to support other children such as through our Wellbeing Champions. We celebrate good work and effort in our weekly celebration assembly.

Visitors and visits including visits to different places of worship, all enhance the work routinely undertaken in school.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs:

Pupils are reminded of their place in a culturally diverse society. This is achieved through our Religious Education curriculum and the SMSC aspects of the school. Assemblies and class work promote the diversity of society and the right for each person to be respected and valued equally. Our culture celebration provides an opportunity to celebrate diversity and learning from others, including cultural workshops and the sharing of cultural food.
