Haberdashers' Advantage at Slade Green Primary
Our pupils have a world of opportunities at their fingertips through our unique character curriculum: The Haberdashers' Advantage.
Thanks to our staff, the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, our community, and our many partners, the Haberdashers experience for every pupil is like no other. By giving them this advantage, we support our pupils to be happy, confident and successful individuals who will contribute to making their communities – and the world – a better place.
The Hatcham Primary Haberdashers’ Advantage develops the individual character of our students through our school values, which fall under four pillars: moral, civic, performance and intellectual. To ensure equitable opportunities for our students the curriculum is focussed on three key areas:
- Taught – opportunities to teach our Trust values and character pillars
- Caught - policies and procedures that embody our Trust values and character pillars
- Sought – opportunities to get involved in experiences and opportunities that differentiate students and develop our school values
Our curriculum is infused with opportunities for children to develop their character strengths and values. These are complemented by the Principal's weekly assembly, Phase leaders' assemblies, weekly class PSHCE assemblies and singing assembly. Together, discrete and embedded learning gives children the knowledge, language and moral exemplars to help them continue strengthening their values.

Broadening horizons with new experiences
Children are given various learning experiences and curriculum enrichment opportunities to broaden their knowledge and experience with learning being brought to life through outdoor learning, visitors and school trips. This could be to our local church, park, or library or wider afield to a museum, gallery, theatre, concert hall, religious building, or other place of educational interest. Last year this included trips to the Cutty sark, Houses of Parliament, Planetarium, Maritime museum, Lesnes Abbey, Dulwich College, British Museum and the Tower of London. All our visits are designed to offer unique experiences that make learning real, and this enrichment prepares children to become successful members of their diverse community and continue to raise their aspirations.
We are extremely fortunate to be set in extensive grounds providing a rich, natural learning resource offering opportunities to learn in different ways and on different scales than in the classroom. We take our learning outside of the classroom whenever possible allowing children to develop confidence, independence, and self-esteem along with awareness and knowledge of the natural environment.
In Year 6, pupils have the opportunity to go on a residential trip. This provides time for children to spend quality time together in a variety of challenging outdoor pursuits developing teamwork, resilience, and independence.
There is an excellent range of extra-curricular clubs, ranging from self-defence to sign language and dance. Our children can use these extra-curricular activities to develop their social skills, enhance their abilities to work in teams and gain new skills, helping them to become well-rounded young people.
Children benefit from specialist teachers in physical education and music with all children learning to play a musical instrument. These enrichment opportunities often provide the most memorable learning experiences and help children make sense of the world around them by putting their learning into a meaningful context
We believe that children should be engaged in their well-being through meaningful, well-thought-out activities, enriched with a rich and varied programme of study, to allow them to excel in every facet of life. Our school motto is Engage – Enrich – Excel.

Haberdashers’ Slade Green Leadership programme
We recognise that our children are the leaders of the future and promote a range of opportunities where children can develop their leadership skills whilst also learning about the importance of democracy. We encourage all children to embrace the wide range of opportunities available to them valuing their voice, ideas and opinions and empowering them to help shape our school development. Head Pupils (and deputies) - our ultimate role models and are responsible for representing the school and lead our pupil parliament and represent the school on our Youth Advisory Board. Pupil parliament members– elected to represent their peer groups in all matters regarding school improvement acting as the official voice of all children.
