Reading

At Haberdashers' Slade Green, we believe that the reading curriculum should engage the pupils through a love of reading, enrich their understanding with a language-rich learning environment, and allow them to excel through a love of reading. We aim for children to read widely, ensuring that they increase their cultural capital and knowledge through reading. As a part of this, a strong foundation of systematic synthetic phonics is essential to guarantee that every child progresses as a reader from Reception until Year 6. This support will continue and develop with the child, reinforcing our aim that every child leaves us a fluent reader.

Writing

At Haberdashers' Slade Green, we believe that the writing curriculum should engage children with meaningful challenges and themes, enriched with rigorously taught technical skills, to enable them to excel as confident written communicators. We aim for our children to be able to compose a range of written genres, as well as engaging with the wider curriculum through writing. As a part of this, they will gain the ability to generate and organise their ideas, both imaginative and practical, and apply their knowledge and understanding of technical skills (grammar, punctuation, handwriting and spelling) in a range of contexts. We believe that a secure basis in writing knowledge is crucial to a high-quality education and will give our children the tools they need to participate fully as a member of society.

Our English Leaders are Ms Kelly & Mr Warner.

Phonics

At Haberdashers' Slade Green, we believe that the Phonics curriculum should engage the pupils through a love of reading, enrich their understanding with a rigorously taught systematic synthetic phonics, and allow them to excel as fluent readers and writers. We aim for children to read widely, applying decoding and contextual knowledge. As a part of this, a strong foundation of systematic synthetic phonics is essential to guarantee that every child progresses as a reader from Reception until Year 6. This support will continue and develop with the child, reinforcing our aim that every child leaves us fully literate and ready for the next stage in their learning.
